The owners of this beautiful cottage in Kensington, CA are plant enthusiasts and love to spend time in sunshine of their front garden. They wanted a colorful, flower-filled, water-wise version of a classic cottage garden. We updated their dilapidated fence with a modern horizontal design, pulled out the overgrown succulent hedge and planted a pollinator friendly border of Hidcote lavender, a unique yellow bloom echinacea, and Blue Spires salvia with a carpet of dymondia silver carpet.
The driveway is lined with blue fescue grass and a mulch of the white pea gravel that matches the gravel garden next to the house filled with native sword fern and rushes.
The main garden that used to be a lawn was replaced with a colorful planting of salvia, lavender, echinacea, cordyline, coreopsis, and heuchera. Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’ grass provides height and movement with a touch a privacy without removing the ability for the homeowners to chat with the neighborhood, which they like to do. A flagstone patio filled with creeping thyme seams provides a place for the family to sit and enjoy their beautiful outdoor space.
